The Uniting Church in Australia was formed in 1977 as a coming together of Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational churches across Australia, following discussions and decisions about church union which began prior to Australia federation in 1901. The Basis of Union is the statement of purpose, belief and polity which establishes this new expression of the Christian church.

You can find out more about the Uniting Church through its different councils:

The national church has issued two key Statements to the Nation, which gave a more current response to issues in Australian life at that time:

  • 1977 – when the Uniting Church was inaugurated
  • 1988 – Australia’s bicentennial year
